Since the target population was known to be students enrolled at the University of
Florida, determination of the primary trade area was made on the basis of where these students live. All 45,398 students enrolled at University of Florida were geocoded using CACI Coder/Plus (Thrall 1998). Students were mapped as a point data file.
Using ESRI's Arc View and their Spatial Analyst add-in, the kernel method was applied
to visualize student density (Thrall and McMullin 2000). An envelope was drawn to inscribe the predominant locations of those students. The resulting trade area in scribed more than 50 percent of all students enrolled at the University, and about 80 percent of students whose resident addresses were geocoded. The resulting primary trade area for students enrolled at the University is presented in figure 5.6. The high concentration, lower left inside trade area is an artifact of a large post office where many students choose to maintain post office boxes.
