Figure 2. The Influence of Specific Basic Conditioning Factors, Self-Esteem, and Motivation on
Self-Care Action of the Adolescent at Flinders University on September 25, 2012nsq.sagepub.comDownloaded from explored what makes a person a signifi-cant other to adolescents. Attributes, characteristics, and behaviors contrib-uting to or lowering self-esteem were identified. Offers of praise or encour-agement, being helpful or respectful, and demonstrating love were found to contribute to increasing self-esteem. These findings are further supported by the review of Papini et al. (1989), in which emotional closeness between
family members was found to contrib-ute to higher levels of self-esteem.

The enabling capabil-ity—motivation—within the power components of self-care agency is sug-gested to be influenced by self-esteem, providing a link between the power components and the foundational capa-bilities and dispositions. The basic con-ditioning factors of age, gender, devel-opmental state, family systems, sociocultural orientation, health state, and environmental factors are sug-gested as important influences on an adolescent’s self-esteem, ultimately af-fecting his or her emerging self-care
agency.
