INTRODUCTION
1. Rationale
PVGas North is the biggest gas supplier in the North of Vietnam; with many business advantages it has achieved some remarkable success. However, its profit margin has still been very low, even lower than industry average. That makes me question about the competitiveness of PVGas North.
On the basic of my internship in PVGas North, I have found out the answer to my question. By observation and analysis, I believe that the key to PVGas North’s huger success is the expansion of its product range.
This report will focus on the comparisons between PVGas North and other Vietnamese gas providers in terms of products and services to point out the weaknesses of PVGas North and put forward some solutions for the future development of the company.
2. Objectives
This report is aimed to:
• Describe the product range of PVGas North
• Compare the company with other Vietnamese gas providers
• Point out the challenges PVGas North is facing
• Put forward some recommendations to improve future trading activities
3. Methodology
This study was made using following methods:
- Data collection (data collected from real observations and secondary materials)
- Data processing (analysis summarization, statistics, and some economic analysis methods)
4. Structure
This study is composed of three chapters:
- Chapter 1: An overview of PVGas North
- Chapter 2: Comparison with other Vietnamese gas providers in terms of products and services
- Chapter 3: Remarks and Recommendations


CHAPTER 1: AN OVERVIEW OF PVGAS NORTH
1.1 Establishment and Development goals until 2015
1.1.1 Establishment
PetroVietnam Northern Gas Company was set up according to decision number 826/QĐ-DKVN, dated April 12th, 2006 of Petro Vietnam’s Board of Directors. The company was established on the foundation of the Northern Gas Trading entity and Petroleum Commerce Company’s gas marketing department.
On December 20th, 2006, PetroVietnam Northern Gas Company was transferred into PetroVietnam Gas North Joint Stock Company (generally abbreviated as PVGas North)
On May 25th, 2007 PVGas North organized its first shareholder meeting.
On June 25th, 2007, PVGas North was issued a Business Registration Certificates No. 0103018088 by The Hanoi Department of Planning and Investment. The company has officially been operated since July 1st, 2007 with a chartered capital of VND 135 billion operating in financial investments, property trading and refined petroleum product trading.
On October 29, 2007, in an extraordinary general shareholders' meeting, PVGas North decided to increase the company’s chartered capital from VND 135 billion to VND 270 billion by issuing stock, according to the resolution No. 09/NQ-ĐHCĐ-KMB.
By the date of August 15th, 2008, the company’s chartered capital was increased by VND 131,170,000,000.
On September 10th, 2008, PVGas North was re-issued a Business Registration Certificates No. 0103018088 by The Hanoi Department of Planning and Investment, with a chartered capital of VND 266,170,000,000.
January 7th, 2009 marked a milestone of the company as for the first time, its 26,617,000 stocks were listed on the Hanoi Stock Trading Center (HASTC) with transaction code PVG.
1.1.2 Development goals until 2015
According to the Speed-up Strategy for development of PVN to 2015 and orientations to 2025, along with the Master plan on Vietnamese Gas industry development for 2015 period and orientations to 2025, PVGas North is on duty to reach the average growth rate of 12% per year over the period of 2008 – 2025 and increase the market share on LPG over northern Vietnam from 25% to 30%. However, the company is self-determining to take over 50% of the market share all over northern Vietnam on LPG trading, becoming the first LPG trading company in the North and Central Region in terms of size, market, capital and cooperative capability, domestic and foreign competitive integration.
1.2 Organization structure
Under the direct instructions of Board of Shareholders Assembly, Board of Management defines common values, goals and strategies for the entire joint stock company. Secretariat Department supports Board of Management in its task of strategic leadership. Department of Financial Advisors supports Board of Directors in financial matters. The six departments and three subgroups operate independently, led by the Board of Directors for the benefits of Corporate Shareholders.

Business operations are the responsibility of six departments:
 Business Development Department identifies strong potential markets for the product and look for channels of distribution in the gas market.
 Investment Department selects investment managers, monitors performance, screens investments, engages in advocacy and manages the investment programs.
 Finance & Accounting Department takes responsibility for organizing the financial and accounting affairs including the preparation and presentation of appropriate accounts, and the provision of financial information for managers.
 Quality Assurance Department assures that the delivered product meets workmanship standards imposed for standard products and customer requirements.
 Management & Organization Department focuses on how to effectively manage and develop strategy for the company
 Engineering Department is responsible for the production as well as the infrastructure repair.
Products trading and projects managing are the responsibility of three subgroups:
 Representative Offices
 Subsidiaries and Affiliates
 Project Managing Departments
PVGas North has two major shareholders:

PVGas North has three subsidiaries which play a role as distributors for end-product LPG. Gas is supplied in large amount from PVGas North, and then is allotted to industrial/household users through agents/outlets of three subsidiaries.

PVGas North directly provide LPG in very large amount to its subsidiaries and industrial producers. Its three subsidiaries play a role as distributors for end-product LPG. Gas is supplied firstly from PVGas North who is both domestic producer and LPG importer, LPG then is allotted to industrial/ household users through the representative agents/ outlets.
 PVGas North focuses on its business activities including:
• Export and Import of gas and petroleum products
• Investment and construction of warehouse, extract & charging station
• Delegation of import, gas transportation service and
