(b) Excavation of the material claimed as rock shall not be performed until the material has been cross-sectioned by the Contractor and approved by the Engineer.
(c) Trenches or foundation pits for structures or structure footings shall be of sufficient size to permit the placing of structures or structure footings of the full width and length shown. The sides of trenches or pits shall be adequately supported at all times. The elevations of the bottoms of footings as shown on the Drawings shall be considered as approximate only and the Engineer may order, in writing, such changes in dimensions or elevations of footings as may be deemed necessary to secure a satisfactory foundation.
(d) Boulders, logs, and any other unsuitable material encountered in excavation shall be removed from the site and shall not be used for back-filling purposes.
(e) After each excavation is completed, the Contractor shall notify the Engineer to that effect, and no footing or bedding material shall be placed until the Engineer has approved the depth of excavation and the character of the foundation material.
(f) All rock or other hard foundation material shall be cleaned of all loose material and cut to a firm surface, either level, stepped or serrated as directed by the Engineer. All seams or crevices shall be cleaned out and grouted. All loose and disintegrated rock and thin strata shall be removed.
(g) When the footing is to rest on material other than rock, excavation to final grade shall not be made until just before the footing is to be placed. When the foundation material is soft or mucky or otherwise unsuitable, in the opinion of the Engineer, the Contractor shall remove the unsuitable material and replace it with granular backfill, as specified in specification section 03700 or 03800 as required by the Engineer. This foundation fill shall be placed and properly compacted in 15-cm layers up to the foundation elevation.
(h) If, in the opinion of the Engineer, the foundation material is unsuitable solely because of the Contractor’s failure to fulfill his obligations under Specification section 01010 “General Requirements” for “Working in and Dealing with Existing Water Flows”, then the Contractor may either:
♦ carry out at his own expense the removal and replacement described above; or
♦ suspend works in that excavation until such time as the foundation material becomes suitable.
(i) When foundation piles are used, the excavation of each pit shall be completed before the piles are driven and any placing of blinding stone shall be done after the piles are driven. However if for any reason it is impossible to drive the piles after excavation, piles shall be driven from the natural ground level, as directed by the Engineer. Surplus length of piles in this case will not be measured for payment.
(j) After both the driving and the excavation are completed, all loose and displaced material shall
be removed, leaving a smooth, solid bed to receive the footing.
(k) All excavated material, so far as suitable, shall be utilized as backfill or embankment, or shall
be removed from the site if surplus to requirements.
8. BACKFILL AND EMBANKMENTS FOR STRUCTURE
On completion of the structure, excavated areas if not to be back-filled in accordance with Specification sections 03700 “Granular Backfill” shall be back-filled with approved material to the level of the finished ground surface. Unless otherwise approved by the Engineer, all backfill shall be carried out in accordance with the requirements of Specification section 03400 “Embankment Construction” of these Specifications.
All material surplus to the requirement of this Specification section shall be utilized for the formation of areas of fill or shall, if instructed by the Engineer, be considered as waste and treated in accordance with Specification section 03500 “Unsuitable Material”.
