The shikimic acid pathway results in the synthesis of aromatic amino acids such as phenylalanine. These amino acids are precursors of compounds whose synthesis has been shown to be regulated by ethylene. Aromatic amino acids are precursors of the phenolic acids (cinnamic, /?-coumaric, and ferulic acid) and coumarins (pisatin, phaseolin, and isocoumarin). The phenolic alcohols coniferyl, sinapyl, and /7-coumaryl are components of lignin. Cinnamic acid and acetyl Co A are precursors of flavonoids such as anthocyanin. Ethylene has been shown to increase the synthesis of a number of these compounds (KE089412).
