Since 2015, the EU member states have struggled to deal with a numerous number of refugees and migrants coming from volatile regions such as North Africa, South Asia, the Middle East, pouring into Europe. Asylum seekers enter the continent both by sea and land. There are total around 464,000 migrants entered Europe by sea during the first nine months of 2005, according to an estimate of the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Among all 28 members, there are major members which are seriously affected including Austria, Hungary, Germany, Czech Republic, Sweden, Italy and France. Until now, the crisis has driven the EU into deep divisions so far and caused problematic issues such as smuggling trade, economic downturn and other moral matters which can lead to a prospect of collapse for the whole bloc. Therefore, governing this crisis is the very crucial topic for the EU members to debate and find out an appropriate approach.Slovenia recognizes the importance to tackle the problem rapidly and comprehensively. On September 2015, Slovenia voted for a plan aimed at relocating 120,000 refugees EU-wide. For its part, Slovenia has attempted to solve the issue by erecting a fence at its border with Croatia, using army to help police officers on resettling the asylum seekers, imposing limits on refugee numbers in which no more than 580 refugees and migrants per day are allowed to enter Slovenia and eventually closing its border on March 2016. Slovenia advocates an approach in which uniform policies must be implemented by all members of the EU. Slovenia stresses that Balkan states, including Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania, Hungary, Greece and Macedonia, need to convene together to reach an agreement which can create favorable conditions for all parties to mutually consult about general solutions to deal with the influx of refugees reaching Europe via Balkan route. Slovenia believes that any unilateral moves taken by any member states could raise internal tensions for the EU. Therefore, Slovenia calls on all parties to cooperate and collaborate to address the issue as soon as possible. In addition, Slovenia welcomes the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) to take actions to help the EU on relocating migrants across Europe and provide humanitarian assistance for them. Simultaneously, Slovenia reaffirms that a significant increase in the budget for Frontex's activities and its staff members need to be approved by the EU Parliament.Slovenia expresses its confidence that, with solid and harmonious cooperation among its member states, the EU could overcome the refugee crisis comprehensively over a short period. By making relentless efforts, we can bring a brighter and prosperous future for our union.
