ACC did not promote ethylene production in the ferns Trichomanes speciosum, Ophioglossum reticulatum, Salvinia natans, Azolla caroliniana (OSB89001). However ACC and IAA promoted, and cobalt ions inhibited, eth­ylene production in the ferns Pteridium aquilinum, Matteuccia struthioptheris, and Polystichum munitum, suggesting that these plants do have the same biosynthetic pathway as higher plants (TIT87499). Additional work is needed to resolve the question of which ethylene synthesis pathway is present in ferns.
