The promotion of seed germination by ethylene was first described by Vacha and Harvey in 1927 (VAC27187). The response occurs in both monocots (RUG47297) and dicots (DEU33313). However, only some species exhibit ethylene-enhanced germination. In surveys of weed seed germination, about one-third of those tested showed a promotion (CHA71035, TAY79007). The requirements for germination experiments are simple, the response is rapid, and the end point easy to measure. In spite of these advantages, and the practical importance of controlling germination, our understanding of how ethylene acts remains superficial.
