Auxin Promotes the Formation of Lateraland Adventitious RootsAlthough elongation of the primary root is inhibitedby auxin concentrations greater than 10–8M, initia-tion of lateral (branch) roots and adventitious rootsis stimulated by high auxin levels. Lateral roots arecommonly found above the elongation and root hairzone and originate from small groups of cells in thepericycle (see Chapter 16). Auxin stimulates thesepericycle cells to divide. The dividing cells gradu-ally form into a root apex, and the lateral root growsthrough the root cortex and epidermis.
