The first three years of life are a time of very rapid personal development. Furthermore, the child of this age lives in the moment. The Montessori Toddler Community responds to both of these developmental traits by adapting itself, moment by moment, to the changing needs of each child. In turn, every member of this small community has something to contribute.

There are typically ten to twelve children berween the ages of about twelve and thirty-six month, one trained Montessori teacher (sometimes called a Guide), one assistant, and often a second assistant or an aide. All the adults have a profound respect for the child and an understanding of toddler development. The adults consistently maintain an atmosphere of positive, self-guided discipline, modeling respectful behavior while acknowledging each child’s feelings.

In any group of children of this age, conflicts and misunderstandings regularly arise. The adults in a Montessori Toddler Community view these situations as vital opportunities for children to work through their feelings in positive and peaceful ways, gradually gaining in social and emotional maturity. No one is forced to share or apologize, but everyone is expected and hlped to behave repectfully toward others.

Because of this foundation of trust and respect, the Montessori Toddler Community is full of opportunities to see spontaneous compassion, acts of generosity, and moments of very moving connection berween its members.
