Galbraith (1973,1977) identifies two mechanisms by which organisations may enhance their information processing capabilities. First, he discusses an investment in vertical IS. Vertical IS can receive, process, and distribute information up and down the organisational hierarchy to locations where it is needed most for effective decision-making (Bolon, 1998). Second, he exan-dnes the need for lateral relationships within organisations. Although Galbraith did not specifically focus this method on IS, Bolon (1998) argued that it can be applied in terms of integrating horizontal systems that provide information by cutting across organisational functional areas.
