A Waste of Time
People look at each other today by what they are, not who they are. Do not get me wrong there are still hate crimes and a lot of racial issues in the world; however that is not what I am trying to stress. I am talking about why celebrities and very wealthy people get treated from the rest of the population in the world! Why social stature in society has so much value to people that they will do whatever it takes to fit in. I am talking about why people use manipulation and dishonesty to try and be or live up to something they can’t or never will be. I believe that everyone is their own person and trying to be someone else is a waste of their time and much less their life.
In Henrick Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler, the main character is an intelligent, yet dishonest young women, named Hedda. She views her husband (George Tesman) as a cowardly unsuccessful writer who will not be able to raise her status in society. She is not afraid to manipulate her husband or friends to get what she wants. She is solely concerned with being the women behind a great aspiring man. Hedda’s social self conforms to demands of family, friends, community, and society as a way of acceptance or a protection.
George Tesman, the husband in Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler, (an independent modern woman) wants to make his wife happy and usually does not realize she is manipulating him. He lacks imagination and seems foolish at times. He is an unsuccessful writer who writes about specialized and obscure work. His academic field of study is focused on history and anthropology. Ultimately, Tesman feels like writing books is his purpose in life, and it comes before anything else.
