He began blogging about his cancer battle as a way of updating friends and family of his condition, but it soon became a 'token mechanism' for his family to get through the hellish ordeal.

The surgery was gruesome - slicing open the sides of his neck to remove lymph nodes before entering through his mouth with a robot and cutting out the tumour and a large chunk of his tongue.

'It was a pretty big cut, one of the largest the surgeon said he had ever done,' he said. 'The pain was one thing, but the weeks after it were much worse.'
