The Valeport settling tube, approximately 5 cm in diameter by 1 m long, was modified by constructing a flow-through water jacket around it. It was deployed horizontally in the water column at the desired depth and oriented into the flow by a vane. A messenger was sent to close the ends of the tube, which was then raised back to the surface, still in the horizontal.
