The definition of sustainable development as it is known today began in 1987 with the
Brundtland report from the United Nations that stated, “Sustainable development is
development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of
future generations to meet their own needs” (UnitedNations, 1987).
Sustainable design today draws from many roots thatdate back to the energy and
environmental concerns of the 1970s but is based ona more holistic and comprehensive
vision. There is now recognition that sustainability is not just about the environment and
natural resources, it represents a balance between environment, economics and equity.
