A preliminary remark is in order beore tackling our analysis: The notion o insin-uation we will concentrate upon is one specific instantiation o the general con-cept, namely that aspect that is structurally identified by the syntactic patterns «NP1 insinuate NP2», in which NP1, the subject, is a human being and NP2, the object, can be either an abstract noun or a

In most dictionaries, the meaning o “insinuation” thus circumscribed is first cir-cularly defined in terms o a set o alleged synonyms roughly clustering around the notion o indirectness, such as “suggestion,” “hint,” “implication,” “innuen-do,” “allusion,” each in turn defined by all the other members o the set; proper-ties that distinguish insinuation rom the rest are urther spelled out by means o such adjectives as “artul,” “derogatory,” “malicious,” “sly,” “subtle,” “veiled,” and “crafy.”Corpus queries o «insinuate» confirm that the pattern we will be ocusing upon, although overall not very requent, exhibits a record o occurrences that point to some negative content as the preerred object o insinuations, at the same time showing requent associations with such adverbs as «crafily», «slyly», «darkly».I will move rom the assumption that although our encyclopaedic knowledge o insinuations can be evoked by variously combining these words, no real under-standing o the specificities o insinuation as a communicative strategy can be gained on this basis. Moreover, I will assume that a descriptive definition o verbal insinuation would naturally result in a list o properties that individually identiy partial aspects o insinuating as a communicative behavior, which can neither be reduced to a (sub)set o necessary and sufficient conditions nor considered the outcome o their linear sum. Thereore, I will first review what intuitively appear to be the crucial components o insinuation, discussing their status, and then provide analyses o examples o insinuation aimed to illustrate the mechanisms o its reception and interpretation. This will hopeully amount to discovering the “whatness” o insinuation via the “how” o its linguistic and communicative mechanisms.
