1. ecotourism, or the concept of sustainable development, to which it refers, is a relatively new phenomenon2. yet its origins are decidedly more evolutionary than revolutionary3. its roots lie in the centuries old practice of nature and outdoor tourism4. but its branches reach into the fields of community development and conservation5. the idea that tourism can play the leading role in the conservation of natural resources while contributing directly to sustainable economic development is a decidedly recent notion6. nevertheless, it has developed like a streak of lightning7. that can be seen in the recent signing of the BERLIN DECLARATION ON BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY AND SUSTAINABLE TOURISM on march 19978. the Berlin Declaration was signed by ministers from more than 20 different countries, and was endorsed by the United Nations and the World Tourism Organization9. it embraces a commitment to the principles of sustainable tourism, noting, “Tourism development activities should be environmentally, economically, socially and culturally sustainable in planning and practice”
