d–f | A chromosome position effect operates in a quite different way to
compartmentalize the release of σF activity. The SpoIIAB anti-σ
factor (green circles) is an unstable protein that is encoded by a
gene that is located at an oriC-distal part of the chromosome
(green boxes). During the period immediately after formation of
the polar septum (e), and before the spoIIAB gene is translocated into the prespore (f) (FIG. 3), SpoIIAB protein concentrations decrease, allowing the more stable σF protein to
become active in the small compartment.
