Forest management today meets commercial, social and environmental needs, and forests can be independently audited and certificated for environmental performance.
There is understandable public concern at the loss of forests world-wide. It is however important to differentiate between sustainable commercial forestry undertaken by the paper industry and the clearing of forests in the less well developed parts of the world where this is done to meet the needs of land hunger and where wood is the only source of fuel. Over 50% of wood cut annually world-wide is used for fuel and a large amount is used for construction.
The paper and board industry uses 10% of the wood harvested annually. It uses thinnings, the tops of large trees and saw mill waste, i.e. materials which otherwise would become waste (Fig. 8.23). Commercial forestry for the paper industry is leading to an increase in both the land area devoted to forestry and the volume of wood growing in those forests.

Nó sử dụng thinnings, các ngọn cây lớn và nhìn thấy chất thải nhà máy, vật liệu tức là nếu không sẽ trở thành chất thải (Hình. 8.23). Lâm nghiệp thương mại cho ngành công nghiệp giấy được dẫn đến sự gia tăng cả diện tích đất dành cho lâm nghiệp và khối lượng gỗ ngày càng tăng trong những khu rừng.
