The first step in determining the source of the problem is to verify that the HP LaserJet 1300 printer hardware is functioning correctly.
Unplug the parallel cable or network data cable from the back of the HP LaserJet 1300 printer. This will ensure that information is not received from the computer while testing the product hardware.
Verify that the product is in the Ready state.
Press the Go button to print a self-test / configuration report.
If the self-test / configuration report prints with garbled characters or symbols, have the printer serviced.
If the self-test / configuration report prints correctly, proceed to the next step to continue troubleshooting the issue. After completing each step, attempt to print a page using the software application or document in question.
Verify that the printer is directly connected to parallel port on the computer and remove any external (pass-through) devices such as switchboxes, tape drives, or scanners.
Verify that an IEEE-1284 compliant cable is being used. Try a different IEEE-1284 cable, if available.
