Nigeria is going to struggle to make much progress as long as it continues to send 2 of its greatest assets abroad whilst getting nothing in return. Those assets are, firstly, the financial wealth stolen by corrupt politicians and, much more importantly, its best brains.

Over the past decade or so, Nigeria has made efforts to tackle corruption. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) might sometimes be used by the president as a weapon against his political enemies, but it has had an impact. Transparency International attests that Nigeria has been getting steadily less corrupt with each passing year.

In my opinion, Nigeria's biggest problem - and one that it has done nothing to tackle - is that her best brains promptly flee its shores. Nigerian immigrants are the best educated in the United States (http://www.chron.com/news/articl... the same is possibly true for the United Kingdom and a large number of other Western countries.

So what can be done to improve the standard of living for Nigerians? The government needs to make the brain drain problem a top priority. It takes 20 years to train a doctor or an engineer. It may take too much effort and money to lure the Nigerian professionals who have left back to the country, but Nigeria must ensure that that next doctor that is graduating today does not feel the need to get on a plane and take 20 years of Nigerian investment straight to America.

However, I do not know how Nigeria can do that.

This is a huge question, enormously complex.

On the plus side the country's macroeconomics are undeniably positive and the future has very real potential to be bright. On the negative side far too many Nigerian's are out for themselves and view any opportunity to divert funds for personal use as their prerogative, and these actions collectively dim hopes for a bright future.

It is glib to simply say things begin with the individual, still it's my best response so I'd advocate.more resources be put into encouraging and training tomorrow's entrepreneurs.

I would start with basic social welfare.

Consider NYSC, the N19,800 allowance should not stop at the end of one year. I think the Fed should consider paying it continuously for say 10 years. In that time, graduates can have a sensible saving for investment.

Next is infrastructure, the Fed and State governments have not invested nearly enough in infrastructure to help diversify the economy. I think half of our problems can be solved if we had 24 hour electricity. Even GOD himself started creation with light!

Also education needs to re examined, regardless of what most Africans think, most Nigerians walk around with low self esteem stemming from having to learn in the English language. This suggests that if you cannot speak English, you are not intelligent which is a big lie. If people are opportune education in their native tongue, it will shock you how much standards will rise.
