There are the customs and taboos at Tet of Vietnamese people. Three of all these customs are setting up the “Neu” tree, The First Visitor To The House and Khai But. First, “Neu” tree is a tall bamboo tree which carries on top flags of five colors symbolic of the Five Elements. By the 7th of 1st month, the “neu” is taken down in an offering ceremony to Heaven and Earth, called “Le Khai Ha”. Second, The First Visitor To The House: Many Vietnamese People believe that at the beginning of the new year, the first visitor would determine good or bad luck for the family during the new year. Therefore, every new year, the family would ask a happy and prospered person to be the first visitor of the house. Third, Khai But: The first time that pen was set to paper during the New Year was considered very important. Besides, it is believed that the deeds done in the first few days of the New Year can sow the seeds of good or bad luck for the entire year, people are very careful of their words and behavior during the first three days of the New Year including weeping or whining is not allowed, not to wear white or black because these are color of death and grief and weeping trash is forbidden, especially the remains of burnt fire-crackers out of the door, because it is considered as sweeping money out of the house; it is also forbidden to use strong, vulgar words. In short, Tết-Lunar New Year-though undergoes a complicated process of traditional rites full of “superstitious” activities – reflects love, generosity, family strong bond, thanksgiving and hope. It typifies the sentimentalism within each of the Vietnamese people.
