Review of the use of remote sensing in mangrove managementUseful types of image dataA variety of sensors and image processing methods havebeen used in the remote sensing of mangroves (Table13.1). Landsat TM and SPOT XS are the most commonsensors but aerial photography (both black and white, andcolour) is heavily under-represented in Table 13.1.Despite more than 70 years of application – the first aerialphotographic surveys of mangroves were made in the 1920s – it is difficult to obtain an overview of aerial photography for the assessment of mangroves because published accounts are scarce. This in itself is no reason todoubt the success of aerial photography, instead it probably reflects the low emphasis that governmental departments, aid agencies or consultancy firms place on thepublication of results in scientific literature.
