Screwdrivers

Introduction:
Screwdrivers are used to tighten or loosen screws. Hand-held screwdrivers can be divided into two main types:

(a) Standard types with tips to suit recessed screw slots; and
(b) Special types with tips to suit recessed head screws.

Note: Many varieties of screwdriver tips are made for use with drill braces and power tools etc.

Standard Screwdrivers
These are made with:

(a) Round blades or square shanks (for use with spanners to loosen stubborn screws).
(b) Handles of metal, wood or moulded plastic.
(c) Flared tips, which vary in length and thickness with the length of the blade.


Standard screwdrivers are specified in size by length of shank/blade and width of the tip. eg. 200mm by 6mm. Variations of the standard screwdriver include:

(a) `Stumpy', `stubby' or `dumpy' screwdrivers (about 40mm by 6mm) for use where there is limited room.
(b) Light duty screwdrivers with small tips.
