Treatment of CHFOnly management of edema is discussed. Effective medical therapy of CHF dependson understanding the abnormal physiologic processes that cause salt andwater retention as well as venous congestion. Generalized edema affects all organfunctions, including the myocardium with resultant decrease in left ventricle (LV)contractility, coronary blood flow, and ventricular compliance. Therefore, reductionin edema formation is an essential component of the overall management ofCHF. The following therapeutic measures apply to most of the patients with mildto severe chronic CHF. Educating the patients about their condition and providinginformation about salt restriction and daily weight as a measure of salt and fluidintake are extremely helpful in long-term management of CHF.
