Formed FinishesWhen form release agents are overapplied, they form a film that varies inthickness as excess release agent is dislocatedduring concrete placement andvibration. In the worst case, cement pasteand color pigment can "float" in pocketsof excess release agent and produceuneven coloring. This also can produce aweak concrete surface, bug holes, smallvoids, and other visual defects (see Photo16). Oil-based form coatings should beavoided as they may stain the concrete.Reputable manufacturers can provideinformation on recent developments inThe Construction Specifier December 199813. Over troweling can entrap moistureand create dark areas.14. Edging work, performed after the concrete beganto harden, is the likely cause of this discoloration.15. The pale broom mark, which is permanent, shows the first broom stroke after the broomwas wetted.16. Excessive use of form release agents cancontribute to discoloration and voids in aformed concrete surface.release agent technology that haveimproved as-cast surface uniformity. When concrete is cast against clean,smooth-surface form materials such assteel or plastic-faced plywood, the as-castconcrete surface will be smooth and shiny. While a rough concrete surface will scatterreflected light and soften the impact ofblemishes, a smooth surface will makevariations more conspicuous. Most castin-placeand tilt-up concrete is texturedfor this reason. A variety of textured formliners are available and can be used to createattractive architectural effects.Another alternative is to use mechanicalmethods such as sandblasting, grinding,or bush hammering to roughen thesurface. Discolorations caused by interactionwith the form release is typically only"skin deep" and can be removed usingthese mechanical abrasion techniques (seePhotos 17 and 18). Removing additionalcement provides an exposed aggregate finish,as discussed above. Many attractivesurface treatments can be created by combininga colored concrete matrix withselect aggregate in complimentary or contrastinghues.Porous form materials, such as lumber
