Hunt for Lightning

Jay entered the room where Kai was training.

He swaggered over to the boy in red and hugged him from behind, hiding his face in the crook of his neck.

“Jay, I need to train.” He said, pushing Jay off his shoulders.

“Oh come on. We never get time alone like this.” He whined.

“Fine.” He surrendered, walking to the bench to get his water.

“See how nice this is?” Jay asked, laying his head on Kai’s lap.

“Yeah, this is nice.” Kai sighed.

“Wish it could be this nice all the time.”

“Me too.”

“But it can’t.”

“Huh, what?” Kai asked looking down at the redhead.

“I need you to wake up.” Jay said as he stood up.

“What?” Kai ask, standing to face Jay.

Jay placed a hand on Kai’s shoulders.

“I need you to wake up. Right now.” He said.

-

Kai woke up in his bunk, staring at the now empty one above him.

“Kai, we need you up on the bridge.” Cole said leaning into the room.

“I’ll be right up.” He sighed.

“You okay?” Cole asked stepping in to the room. Half of his body fazed through the doorway.

“It’s nothing.” Kai snapped back.

“Are you sure?” He inquired.

“Yes. Okay, I’m fine! Jeez! Layoff.”

“It was about Jay wasn’t it-”

“I said it was nothing, okay?! I’ll be up in a minute.”

“Alright. Just, if you need to talk-” Cole started.

“Ok, I got it. Thanks.” Kai stood to get ready.

-

Kai made his way up to the bridge, where he found the rest of his teammates (with a sad lack of blue).

“Morning.” Nya did her best to smile.

“Hey. What did you need?” Kai asked, avoiding eye contact.

“We have a possible location for Jay” Zane said, casting a map on the wall with his eyes.

“What? Where?” Kai asked, now intrigued.

“Two day flight from here. On the other side of the mountains.” Nya pointed to an area east of their location.

“There’s a small village past the mountains, that’s where the tip said he was.” Cole piped up.

“Tip?” Kai looked at Cole.

“We received an anonymous tip that the Blue Ninja was spotted there in rough condition.” Zane explained.

“What are we waiting for? Set a course. Let’s go.” Kai said, smile of hope creeping its way to his lips.

-

Kai is on the bridge as the bounty makes its final bank towards the village.

As the flying ship turns the last crest of the mountain, he sees it.

“Oh no.” He breathes.

The village is in chaos, building’s are in rubble. Fires sprouting up everywhere, and the body’s of villagers speckle the ground.

Kai, now on the ground, runs to the closest villager, a woman clutching her child to her chest.

“What happened here?” He asked, panicked.

The woman looked at him with fear in her eyes, and said,

“He did this.” She said, and ran off to find shelter.

What does she mean, He did this? Kai thought.

“Look! The Ninja have come to save us!” A village elder yelled.

Kai turned to the man and began questioning him.

“What happened, who did this to you? Where did they go?” Kai was worried.

If Jay was here, he could be hurt. Did they get there too late? Was he even there at all?

“This man, he attacked out of nowhere, he killed our people, he destroyed our homes! Just like what happened in the other villages.” The villager responded.

“Which way did he go?” Zane asked, walking up.

“He ran north, there’s another village. He’s going to do to them what he did to us. You Ninja need to stop him.” Another man said.

-

Kai walked through the small town, searching for his friend.

He saw a woman who was treating a cut on a young boy’s forehead. She must be the doctor.

“Excuse me? Did a red haired boy dressed in blue pass through here?” He asked, tapping her shoulder.

“Hm? Oh, yes. Two days back. He was in pretty bad shape. Came in with a head injury and received treatment from myself. He slept in the ward, and was gone by morning. Then the next day, well…”

She gestured to the destruction around her.

“Did you see who did this?” Kai asked.

“No. Sorry. He came and left, fast as lightning.” She said finishing with the boy’s wound and standing.

“It was just awful. You need to stop him. Please…” She continued.

“I promise I’ll do whatever it takes.” Kai said, giving her a determined look.

“Kai! We need to go.” Nya pointed in the direction of the nearby village.

Smoke was forming above the village. He was there. The man that did this.

“Alright. Let’s go, be quick.” Kai said, running back to the bounty.

“You have to stop him.” The doctor said before he left.

Kai looked back at the doctor.

“I will.” And he turned to the bounty.

-

The twenty minute flight to the next village felt like hours to Kai.

He was angry, he was scared and confused.

He needed to stop this monster.

“There it is, we’re here.” Nya said pointing down at the village.

Kai was on the ground before the bounty landed.

There was an explosion at the opposite side of the village.

Villagers ran from the blast, but Kai ran towards it.

Kai could see him. The monster who was doing all of this.

It was Jay.

-

“JAY?!”

Jay turned at the use of his name.
