It was midnight when he woke up to

It was midnight when he woke up to a noise in the kitchen. He relaxed when he saw that she wasn’t sleeping next to him, and it was definitely her making the noise. He pushed the blanket and climbed out of bed. He heard the abnormal sound of the juicer on his way down the stairs.

His girlfriend had a lot of strange habits. This was one of them. A week after they moved in together, he was terrified to find her in the kitchen at 3 am, in her sleeping robe, her hair very messy, with a half sliced chicken, lemon, apple and banana peels surrounding her. He thought she was sleep-walking. She told him she was creating a new dish, since she couldn’t sleep.

It seemed that the only thing she picked up from cooking channels was how to mix random items and hope it ends up tasting good.

“Good morning oppa”

“It’s not morning yet, baby” he remarked.

She giggled. “I’m sorry I woke you. I just had a sudden idea” he nodded. He was glad he didn’t have to go to work in the morning.

She was spontaneous and he loved that about her. He was the opposite but as they dated, he did things more freely and carelessly. He could remember the time she got him to sing in the middle of the street with her, and the time they got caught in a horrible fit of laughter, in front of her parents at a sentence she said that he misunderstood.

He saw her go to the fridge again, searching through the racks for whatever ingredients she had in mind. She stood up with cheddar cheese and strawberry jelly. That was a bad sign. “Do you need my help with anything?”

“You can go to sleep if you want oppa. I’ll try to be quiet” he shook his head. The truth was, he loved watching her little habits. He loved the inhuman sound she makes when she sees a cute baby. He loved how she chases after puppies until they get terrified. He loved how when she lets out a sneeze, she has to wrinkle her nose afterwards.

“I want to watch you, baby” she turned around to give him a wide smile. She then went to the living room. She came back after a while with her mobile at hand.

She played a song and raised the sound, not loud enough for the neighbours to hear, but loud enough for her to swing her hips a bit in front of him, synching the lyrics and signalling him with her finger to walk closer, as if he was charmed, he had no choice but to walk closer. She smirked in response and bit on her lower lip, wrapping her arms around his neck. His hands automatically went to her thighs and he leaned to kiss her.

She separated herself from him to move back to the cutting board to slice the orange that was placed nearby, still synching the lyrics. It was impossible for her to silently listen to a song. It would’ve been annoying if he didn’t love her voice. He woke up early in the morning with her singing in the shower one day and he discovered she had a beautiful voice.

“Baby?”

“Yes oppa?”

“What’s the pressure-cooker doing out?” she giggled at the look on his face.

“I was careful oppa” There didn’t seem to be any human or material losses, so it was all good.

Her mobile switched to another song, one he recognized this time. He joined her in singing. They were soon caught in a sing along session. He offered his hand and she took it, he used it to pull her to his side and spin her around. “I love you” he whispered as he pulled her closer again.

“I love you too”

She went back to stir the bowl after another song. He was trying to fix her sleepy hair. “Oppa can you pass me some pepper please?” He headed over to the spices holder, noticing two cocktail glasses on the counter. She was apparently planning on a late night party after she’d finish her concoction.

She woke him up before dawn once and told him they were having a party. He though she meant the bedroom type of party. She surprised him with an actual music, dancing and pizza party, before sunrise and in their pyjamas. She did it as a way of making up after they had a fight, and she did it ever since.

He handed her the pepper. She emptied nearly half of the container on whatever she was cooking. “I think it’s all done now”

He went behind her to have a look on the bowl. Slices of fish, ginger, mint leaves, tomatoes, along with some ingredients he couldn’t recognize were floating. A side dish of rice, covered with the strawberry jelly was prepared. As he expected, she leaned down on the bowl to smell it first. She’d always sniff anything new before tasting it.

“You’ll be the first to try it oppa” he gulped. She raised a spoon and attempted to shove it inside his mouth. He pulled away immediately. The aroma reached his nose. It didn’t smell that bad really. “Op...” she was about to start whining for him to try it. He cut her off and took a bite into the spoon. She watched his face in anticipation, he seemed expressionless. She decided to try for herself

It was...interesting. “I love it!” he exclaimed.

“Oppa I know it’s horrible”

“What are you talking about?”

“You don’t have to do this. I already tasted it”

“No, I’m serious. I love it” he pushed her aside to get to the bowl again.

She studied his face for any signs of struggling. He really seemed to like it. “It’s not my fault if you get sick”

“This really is amazing baby. Can you make some more?” he was serious. He really liked it.

“I don’t…think I remember how I made it”

She couldn’t help but make a face as he lifted the entire bowl to drink any exceed liquid. She decided to focus on the juice she made earlier. She poured it into two glasses for both of them. He was still busy devouring the bowl. She handed him a glass. He gave her a wide smile before capturing her in his embrace. “Thirty two is because I love all your quirky little habit”

She relaxed in his warmth and he held her closer. She was getting drowsy, as always he was the one that helped her get to sleep.
