of the ATL and alternate-ATG scores with a 2 (Sex of Respondent) by 2(Sex of Target)repeated-measures ANOVA yielded no main effects; a sex-by-target interaction, however, indicated that males' attitudes toward gay men were significantly more negative than any others[F(l,108) = 3.95, p < .05]. A similar analysis with non standardized ATG and alternate-ATL scores yielded no significant effects, although males' scores tended to be more negative [F = 2.55, p = .11]. The discrepancies between mean scores on the ATL and its alternate and between the ATG and its alternate demonstrate the hazard of directly comparing raw scores between the ATG and ATL. The ATG items(which also constitute the alternate-ATL items) appear to elicit some-what more negative responses than do the ATL (and alternate-ATG)items. For comparison purposes, therefore, scores on the two scales and the alternate forms were standardized and entered in a 2 (Sex of Respondent) by 2(Sex of Target)by 2(Set of Items) repeated-measures ANOVA. The difference between item sets was indicated by a significant sex-by-target-by-items interaction [F = 8.72, p < .01]. For the present sample, only the ATL items produced a significant sex-by-target interaction effect. This analysis indicates that female sub-sample members tended to hold equally positive (ornegative) attitudes toward gay men and lesbians.Males, however, tended to respond more negatively to gay men than to lesbians, and this trend was more pronounced when the ATG and alternate-ATL items were used
