Ross Street House, a LEED platinum–rated residence, incorporates a sustainable landscape design that conserves water and energy and maximizes functionality while providing a green sanctuary for the inhabitants and the surrounding wildlife.
The garden areas, classified as rain garden, vegetable garden, and butterfly garden, occupy the front and back yards (figs. 12.16 to 12.18). Landscaped with native plants acclimatized to the site-specific conditions, the gardens respect and maintain the exist- ing ecosystem and require no fertilization or irrigation. The need for irrigation is further minimized through the absence of turf and the incorporation of drought-tolerant prairie plants in areas of strong sun exposure.
The house utilizes an integrated design for its water conservation systems. The rain garden, landscaped with perennials tolerant to wide moisture fluctuations, collects and absorbs storm water that has permeated through the bioswales and the pervious pavers (fig. 12.19). Through this process, the site proactively returns surface water to the ground and replenishes the groundwater supply. Furthermore, a rainwater collection and storage system captures water from the roofs into a 650 gallon (2.461 × 103 L) cistern to provide
landscape irrigation.
