Take a rare glimpse inside the strategic and intelligence divisions of the Global Conservation Group. Last week, Hanoi police forces in Vietnam intercepted a truck carrying three tons of cats smuggled into the country from China. Despite laws prohibiting the consumption of cats; it's commonly considered a delicacy anyway. Animal protection organizations urged Vietnamese authorities to give them custody of the cats rather than "destroy" them.

It became evident early on that authorities were unwilling to work with animal advocacy organizations in order to form a humane plan to care for, treat, or euthanize the cats. In fact, orders were given to Hanoi police forces not to speak to media representatives or discuss the matter in any way.

However, on February 2, a police officer who refused to identify himself informed a Global Conservation Group volunteer in Vietnam that "all the cats have been buried". It was unclear whether the cats were killed before being buried or not. Animal cruelty investigators with the conservation group were determined to get to the bottom of this to prevent future incidents of cruelty. After collecting and examining all available intelligence -- as well as looking over previous incidents similar to this -- they came up with the theory that the cats were likely buried alive because authorities simply did not have the resources to humanely euthanize the animals individually.

The group released their theory to national media outlets, including International Business Times and NPR News, which immediately published the story accusing Vietnam of burying three tons of cats while still alive. It sparked international outrage causing the world to zero in on Hanoi, Vietnam. Since it was clear that Vietnamese authorities were disregarding questions about the cats; hoping this would go away, the Global Conservation Group formed a plan to provoke a response from the communist country. And it worked.

Today, Hanoi police forces released a statement saying the cats were not buried alive -- but crushed to death with a dump truck before being buried. While the organization is still extremely disappointed with the outcome and how authorities handled the situation, they are glad the truth finally came out. They plan to ramp up public pressure to strengthen existing animal cruelty laws in Vietnam to prevent another such tragedy from occurring
