This really couldn’t be easier. Ensuring the car is parked on level ground to avoid false readings, locate the dipstick, which you’ll find around the engine block (it usually has a yellow or orange handle). If you can’t spot it, take a look in your car’s handbook. It’s best to do this when the engine is cold, as oil expands when it gets hot and will give you a false reading.

Pull out the dipstick, being careful not to flick oil about. Give it a wipe with a piece of kitchen roll and replace the dipstick fully. Pull it out again and you can see how far the oil has travelled up the dipstick. It should be somewhere around the maximum mark. If not…
