II. Effect of junk food
Junk food is dangerous to your health. A high intake of junk food can lead to stomach disorders and can also affect the heart. There are now over 400,000 deaths per year caused by illnesses related to being overweight, which means that obesity has now overtaken smoking for the leading preventable cause of death.
Currently, youths and children are becoming more addicted to junk food and if this continues, one in every three children born will develop diabetes in their lifetime, which can cut 17-27 years off your life. A small intake of junk food doesn’t affect you much, but too much fast food can be connected to people having a higher chance of developing diabetes and other illnesses.
Junk food is easily accessible and cheap so people to gravitate toward eating it, which generally refers to foods that contribute lots of calories but little nutritional value. The processed foods that are served have excess in calories, salts, sugars, and trans fats. An excess of these nutrients is not healthy for the body, because it is not able to breakdown the nutrients fast enough therefore turning it into fat.
We all need to eat less sugar, less hydrogenated fats and more fruit and vegetables. Junk food, whilst cleverly packaged with loud advertisements, has limited nutritional value. Most of these food items are high in salt, sugar, fats and calories and offer little in terms of proteins, vitamins, minerals and other essential nutrients. Therefore, it led to an increase in the obesity rate and other disease what used to be considered adult health problems, such as heart disease, high blood pressure (hypertension), high cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes, now occurs in obese children and adolescents.
The consumption of junk food occasionally is unlikely to cause any harm to your health. Most junk foods like packed potato chips typically contain a high amount of salt and whilst we all need a small intake of sodium for our bodies, too much sodium has been associated with an increased risk of hypertension. Similarly, children having ice-creams, cakes and pastries, which have high sugar contents, may lead to dental problems, obesity and other related illnesses. An excessive consumption of caffeine, particularly in drinks like cola, can give rise to problems like mood swings, irritability, lack of concentration and sleeplessness. The consumption of junk food must be minimized for a healthy living, because majority of junk food choices do not deliver beneficial nutritional values. We could actually integrate a few junk foods in our diet with an assurance that it is of moderate amount.
Moreover, one problem with junk foods is that they're low in satiation value so people don't tend to feel as full when they eat them, which can lead to overeating. Another problem is that junk food tends to replace other, more nutritious foods. For example, when people drink lots of soda, they are usually not getting plenty of low-fat dairy or other healthful beverages like green tea or orange juice. When they're snacking on chips and cookies, they're usually not loading up on fruit and vegetable.
The researchers suggested that certain factors inherent to fast food might promote overeating:
It's low in fiber.
It's high in palatability (that is, it tastes good).
It offers a high number of calories in a small volume.
It's high in fat.
It's high in sugar in liquid form.
Regardless of age, the effect of junk food on health settles is usually bad, especially if it is eaten in high quantities. This is a long list of reasons why eating junk food is bad.
Obesity
Junk food plays a major role in the obesity epidemic. By the year 2050, the rate of obesity in the U.S. is expected to reach 42 percent, according to researchers at Harvard University. Children who eat fast food as a regular part of their diets consume more fat, carbohydrates and processed sugar and less fiber than those who do not eat fast food regularly. Junk food in these children's diets accounts for 187 extra calories per day, leading to 6 additional pounds of weight gain per year. Obesity increases your risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and many other chronic health conditions.
Diabetes
Your insulin levels become elevated when you eat processed sugars, such as those in soft drinks, white flour and other foods devoid of fiber and nutrients necessary to properly metabolize carbohydrates. Eating junk foods throughout the day causes chronically high insulin levels, which eventually prompts your cells to begin to ignore this important hormone, resulting in a condition known as insulin resistance. Ultimately, obesity and Type 2 diabetes may set in. Since the 1980s, Type 2 diabetes, which was minimal in teenagers, has risen to 15 percent.
Depression
Junk food may lead to depression in teenagers, according to Andrew F. Smith, author of the book "Fast Food and Junk Food: An Encyclopedia of What We Love to Eat." Hormonal changes at puberty make teens more susceptible to mood and behavioral swings. A healthy diet plays a part in keeping hormone levels on an even keel, while a diet high in junk food falls short of these requirements. Consuming trans fats, saturated fats and processed food is associated with up to 58 percent increase in risk of depression.
Nutrient Deficiencies
Processing that removes vitamins, minerals and fiber makes junk foods into the sources of empty calories that nutritionists disparage. Children who eat a lot of junk foods may develop nutritional deficiencies that lead to low energy, mood swings, sleep disturbance and poor academic achievement, among other health conditions, according to the University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension.
Sodium
High sodium levels are a defining characteristic of many junk foods and one of the contributing factors to the overconsumption of salt that typifies the Western diet and contributes to high blood pressure and heart, liver and kidney diseases, according to Harvard Health Publications. The average American eats five to 10 times more salt than the 2,300 milligrams per day recommended by the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Considering the high rates of high blood pressure among Americans, that level should be even lower -- about 1,500 milligrams per day -- for 70 percent of adults. However, the trend since 1988 shows that fewer people with hypertension adhere to a low-sodium diet now than did then.
The junk food industry uses false advertising and conceals the real nutrition facts to promote what they believe is healthier food. Knowing the nutrition of what you are eating and the purpose of food is helpful in avoiding obesity. By providing your body with the food that is low in sugar, salt, and trans fat and keeping your intake of calories to a healthy amount while avoiding fast foods that give you an excess of calories, sugar, salt and trans fat can help people avoid obesity. By being knowledgeable about foods can help lead to healthier choice which will overall make a life difference.
Even with access to more affordable healthier foods the overall lives of people will become better. Healthier foods help keep weight down, decrease the likely hood for disease associated with obesity, and overall make you feel better. By keeping an average amount of calorie intake and switching to a diet of more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can help maintain a healthy weight. With a healthier diet obesity is proven to decrease and the disease that are associate with it will also decrease in time. Along with weight loss individual will start feeling more energy, which will encourage the healthy eating.
By making small switches to your diet and everyday life the rate of obesity in worldwide will decrease and consumer feel better. Eating healthy has many other advantages than just weight loss. A healthy diet can lead to better skin and hair while making your bones stronger. The numerous amounts of advantages make healthy eating appealing to everyone. With fast food being increasingly prevalent having knowledge about healthy eating will help consumers make better eating choice that will lead to healthier lives.
The rise in obesity today is credited to the increase in the fast food industry and eating out. Poor portrayals of nutrition facts conceal the excess of calories, sugars, salts, and trans fats in fast food. The products produced by fast foods are also claimed to be all natural and healthy, but overall are pumped with chemicals and are heavily processed. Eating healthy does not always have to be a hassle. Also with more knowledge about the overall good things that come with eating healthier and great tastes that can come from health foods consumers will defiantly want
