The novel Perks of being a wallflower includes a series of letters that the main character Charlie wrote to an anonymous recipient to describe about his first year in high school with brand-new experiences and new friends. The novel focuses on the inside world past: the suicide of his only middle-school friend, Michael, a year before, and the death of his favorite aunt, Helen, during his early childhood, Charlie is a wallflower; In other words, he is shy and unpopular. However, his school life changed since he became Patrick’s and Sam’s friend. Throughout the novel, we view that the word of kids is much complicated and always in danger of sexual abuse, drugs, cigarettes and misunderstanding by their parents, teacher. However, in our presentation, we emphasized youthful enthusiasm and priceless friendship. Stephen set up the form for his novel in a very special way! By sending a chain of letters to an unknown person, Charlie, the main character can freely express his feelings about everything he went through. A wallflower is a slang which implies a person who has introverted personality, but still seeks out and partakes in social. They are often socially competent enough to be liked and to attend group gatherings, but many choose or feel the need to blend in and remain silent and the writer implies Chalie. So that, in this case, the only way that help Chalie express himself is writing an anonymous letter. When reading this story, the first impression of him on me is that he was sensitive and vulnerable. Charlie had to go through two big psychological shocks. The first one is his friend’s death, Micheal. He killed himself because of his family’s problem, which made Charlie very sad and not stop crying; even he had to the doctor to treat psychology. His aunt was that person he loved so much. Because she caught an accident on the way to buy presents for him, Charlie blamed hímelf for that. That was the reason why he always kept everything in his mind without telling other people. In another aspect, Charlie had amount of passion for collecting records of music and books. With the help of his teacher, he improved his writing ability. He was highly appreciated by his teacher as a talent writer. Although he got into trouble with his family, friends and love, even when he was taken to hospital after psychological shocks, Charlie always put on an optimistic face. He believed that the best things would come to him and others. I’m really impressed by Sam, Charlie best friend. Sam is very kind, supportive, and non-judgmental of Charlie. What is more, she has some pretty taste in music. In the beginning of the story, it is learned that Charlie had a very serious crush on Sam despite her advising him to “not think of her in that way’’, she said that he is too young for her and they could never be together. Charlie, respecting Sam a lot from the beginning, tried to take her advice. Sam took Charlie into her group of friends, and introduced him to many things including drugs, alcohol, good music, but most importantly, she, along with Patick, gave Charlie a sense of belonging; finally making him feel as if there was somewhere in the world he was meant to be.Charlie was also very important in Sam’s life, as he helped her study for her S.A.T.s and eventually, in both the movie and the book, taught her that she was worth so much more than she gave herself credit for. As the story progresses, Sam opened up to Charlie about her past, then proceeded in kissing him. She wanted Charlie’s first kiss to be better than her own. She told Charlie that she loved him, however, at the time, was still dating Craig. Charlie always tried his best to be happy for her, however struggled silently. Nevertheless, the pair were the best of friends despite their teenage angst, and sexual tension, they shared hugs, dances and remained very close. Nearing the end of the story, Sam was heading off to college and asked Charlie to stay back with her as she was packing. By the end of the story, Sam falls in love with him, and heads off to college, undoubtedly missing Charlie every day that she was away. Although Chbosky’s book was a commercial success, it was banned in some American schools for its content and received mixed reviews from literary critics. This is because, the novel adresses themes permeating adolescence, including introversion, sexuality, and drug use.
