Issue:
When double-clicking a DWG file to have it open in AutoCAD, the program fails to launch or the wrong version of AutoCAD is opened or a program other than AutoCAD tries to load the file.
Causes:
Invalid, damaged, or missing registry entries for DWG and other AutoCAD file type associations.
"AutoCAD DWG Launcher" not associated in Windows to open DWG files.
Non-elevated user or application permissions.
A User Account Control setting that is set too high.
Solution:
Verify that the drawing file has a .dwg extension

By default in Windows, file extensions are not displayed. This can be changed in your Folder Options (see How to enable hidden file extensions in Windows). If you see an extension on the drawing file, verify that it is the last extension in the name by right-clicking the file and choosing Properties. The full file name is displayed under the General tab.

Re-associate the .dwg file type

If the extension on the drawing file is correct, re-associate the . dwg file type (see DWG file type associativity in Windows or DWG file type associativity in the Mac OS).

Make sure the DWG file or folder is writable

Double-check that the DWG file or the folder that contains it has not been set to read-only (right-click, choose Properties, and look for the read-only checkbox).

System Troubleshooting

For the Windows operating system, try these additional suggestions:
Install (or uninstall and reinstall) the same version of DWG TrueView that matches your copy of AutoCAD (see Where to download previous versions of DWG TrueView). This does not apply to the Mac operating system. TrueView installs the same file types that AutoCAD uses. Be sure to right-click the install file and choose "Run as administrator" to start the install (not applicable to Windows XP).

Set AutoCAD to run as administrator (see How to set a program to run as administrator).

Turn off User Account Control (UAC) (see How to turn off User Account Control in Windows).

Repair or reinstall AutoCAD.

Edit the Windows Registry (see warning below):
Press WINDOWS-R on the keyboard to bring up the Run window, enter REGEDIT and click OK.
Navigate to the following folder:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareAutodeskDwgCommonshellexapps
Select the sub-key folder under "apps" with the long string of numbers and letters that is for your version of AutoCAD.
On the right pane of the window, verify that the "OpenLaunch" key contains the correct path to the right acad.exe file. Double-click and edit if necessary.
On the left pane of the window, right-click the folder key for your version of AutoCAD and choose "Copy Key Name."
Select the "apps" folder and in the right pane of the window, double-click (Default).
Delete the current data value and paste in the key name that you copied.
Click OK and then close the Registry Editor window.
Use an alternative method to open drawings

As an alternative to double-clicking a DWG file, use the OPEN command from within AutoCAD to open drawings.
