A large proportion of carpenters, woodcarvers and polishing workers departed from Bac Giang, Thai Nguyen and other districts of Bac Ninh province where the non-farm job opportunities are not available. The route through which these people became regular migrant labors was quite different from one another. Most of carpenters and woodcarvers were relatives of villagers or ex-apprentices who had been taught by the village artisans in Kim Thieu. Thus, the relationship between these migrant labors and the workshop owners were not only as employees and employers, but also as clients and patrons.
