fertile persons, and infants from pregnancies carried bywomen who were unlikely to have an underlyinguterine or other infertility-related disease. Thus, thisstudy suggests that the increased risk of low birthweight in singleton infants born at term who wereconceived with assisted reproductive technology maybe directly related to such treatments for infertility.Singletons who were conceived with assisted reproductive technology also had a moderately elevatedrate of preterm low birth weight. However, increasedrisks were not observed among all subgroups; inparticular, the risk was not increased among infantsdelivered by a gestational carrier rather than the mother. These subgroup analyses involved greatly reducedsamples and must therefore be interpreted cautiously. However, a possible explanation is that the risk ofpreterm low birth weight associated with assisted reproductive technology may be related to some underlying condition in the women who undergo procedures involving such technology rather than to theprocedures themselves.
