The literature review serves five m

The literature review serves five major functions in a research endeavor. It is vital in establishing the current state of the BoK, including identifying where excess research exists (i.e. what is already know?) and where new research is needed (i.e. what is needed to be known?). The review also provides a solid theoretical foundation for the proposed study (related to “what is already known?”). It substantiates the presence of the research problem (related to “what is needed to be known?”) and justifies the proposed study as one that contributes something new to the BoK. Finally,the review frames the valid research methodologies, approach, goals, and research questions for the proposed study. In order to accomplish these functions the review must do more than just “point to the literature”.
An effective review must describe the major points contained in an article, interpret those points,classify the article’s position in the BoK, explain the importance of the article, compare and contrast the findings and position of the article with other articles from the BoK, and evaluate the findings of the article in light of the rest of the BoK.
