The inhibition of anthocyanin formation in faba beans by acetylene was first noted in 1912 by Grafe (GRA12187). In 1915, Harvey and Rose reported that ethylene increased anthocyanin levels in cotton (HAR15027). The ability of ethylene to inhibit anthocyanin formation in developing seedlings has been studied by several investigators. Ethylene inhibition of light-induced anthocyanin formation has been reported for mustard (BUH78109), sorghum (CRA71349), bean (MOR70553), and corn (REN87511) seedlings. The means by which ethylene inhibits light-induced anthocyanin formation has not been explored. Ethylene enhancement of light-induced anthocyanin formation in sorghum was observed when it was applied for an 8-hour period after the completion of the light treatment (CRA71349).
