It seems clear that now is the time to consider the role of information in learning in a direct and comprehensive way and that merging ideas from information science and instructional design and development yields a compelling framework for that consideration. Focusing on learning as the construction of meaning from informa- tion implies a synthetic process in which the learner accesses, evaluates, and uses pieces of information to generate new and personally meaningful understandings of the world. Knowing what kind of information is needed, how to find and retrieve that information, how to understand and evaluate its quality and applicability, and how to put it into a coherent structure is the essence of twenty-first-century learn- ing. Looking at information and learning as complementary elements can provide important and useful guidelines for helping all of us become more effective learners in the information age.
