 What is Bluetooth? Bluetooth is a short-range wireless network
technology that’s designed to make connections between two devices.
Bluetooth is not commonly used to connect a collection of workstations into
a LAN. Instead, Bluetooth connectivity replaces the short cables that would
otherwise tether a mouse, keyboard, game controller, or similar device to a
computer.
Bluetooth can be used to link devices in a PAN, connect home entertain-
ment system components, provide hands-free cell phone operation in an
automobile, connect game controllers to videogame base stations, syn-
chronize handheld devices with desktop computers, and link a cell phone
to a wireless headset (Figure 5-18).
Bluetooth operates at the unlicensed 2.4 GHz frequency,
so it is open to public use.
 How does Bluetooth work? Bluetooth links
devices through a process called pairing. Pairing cre-
ates a persistent link between two devices, usually
through the exchange of an authentication code called
a passkey.
Devices equipped with Bluetooth capability can be set
into discovery mode, in which they are open for pairing.
Two devices in discovery mode can “discover” each other
and exchange passkeys. Once pairing is complete, the two
devices can share data without exchanging passkeys again.
 What are the speed and range of Bluetooth? Bluetooth offers
peak transmission rates of only 3 Mbps, and devices should be within about
30 feet of each other. It is one of the slowest wireless technologies, so it is
suitable for sending small bursts of data, rather than large files.
 Can I tell if my computer has Bluetooth? Bluetooth is built into
many desktop, portable, and handheld computers. If your computer does
not have built-in Bluetooth, you can plug a Bluetooth antenna into a USB
port. You can look for the Bluetooth logo on your computer’s task bar
(Windows) or menu bar (Mac). Figure 5-19 illustrates Bluetooth icons and
what they mean.
