The AVL 442 Blow By Meter is used for the continuous measurement and monitoring of theblow-by gases that escape via leaks from the pistons, piston rings and valve guides (and inturbo-charged engines also from the bearing and bearing gaskets). These gases enter thecrankcase and escape via the crankcase breather. The volume of blow-by gas has proven to be a sensitive indicator of the state of the pistonrings, pistons and cylinder wall, both in engines under development and in engines freshout of production and already in use. Years of observation have shown that when the pistonring fails, even temporarily, e.g. when its action is impeded due to deposits of carbonizedoil or lack of engine oil, or incipient seizure of the pistons or piston rings, the volume ofblow-by gas can more than double in a very short time. On the other hand, a drop in blow-bycan also indicate the formation of deposits because in an intact engine, the gas escapes mainlyalong the bottom of the piston ring grooves.
