His early lifeOn 25 October, 1881, a baby boy was born in Málaga, Spain. This babygrew up to be one of the twentieth century's greatest painters – PabloPicasso. Picasso showed his genius from a very young age. His first wordwas “piz piz”-lápiz (Spanish for pencil) and he could draw before he couldtalk. He was the only son in the family. He didn’t like school much. Hisgreat love was art. When in 1891 his father got a job as an art teacher inMadrid, Pablo went with him to work and he watched him paint.Sometimes he helped his father. One evening, his father was painting apicture of their pigeons. When his father went out, Pablo completed thepicture. It was so beautiful. He gave his son his palette and brushes andnever painted again. Pablo was just thirteen.His life as an artistMany people loved him but some others were shocked by his strange andpowerful paintings. He is probably best known for his Cubist pictures. Hisportraits of people were often made up of triangles and squares in thewrong places. His work changed ideas about art around the world, and tomillions of people, modern art means the work of Picasso.His final yearsPicasso married twice and had four children. His last child, Paloma, wasborn in 1949 when he was 68 years old. At the age of 90, he had anexhibition in the Louvre Museum in Paris. He was the first living artist inLouvre Museum. Picasso created over 6,000 paintings, drawings, andsculptures. Today, a Picasso costs millions of pounds. Once, when theFrench Minister of Culture was visiting Picasso, the artist accidentallyspilled some paint on the Minister's trousers. Picasso apologized andwanted to pay for them to be cleaned, but the Minister said, 'No! Please,Monsieur Picasso, just sign my trousers!' Picasso died in 1973
