In the period of enlightenment, the enlighteners protected the interests of common people - craftsmen, tradesmen and peasants. They criticized social inequality, religious hypocrisy and the immorality of the aristocracy.

There were two different points of view among the English enlighteners: the moderates and the latter wanted more democracy.
