The management board at SL/DE in the Netherlands,
though new to the H&BC market, had nonetheless been
overseeing an international company for many years.
The international structure of SL/DE, however, is differ-
ent from that of other multinationals such as Procter &
Gamble. SL/DE owns many companies offshore, but
they all operate under different names. For the most
part, these companies operate autonomously and many
have their own production, marketing and sales depart-
ments. This is because SL/DE, like its parent, strongly
believes in reinforcing and sustaining entrepreneurship
qualities, and in fact, this has been one of the main objec-
tives of the company right from the time of DE’s merger
with SLC.
