SolutionsStructuralMany alternative technologies exist to accommodate the limitations of thetraditional septic tank and leach field. The problems associated with septicsystems in vulnerable areas; for example, those with high water tables, nearwater bodies and in shallow soils over bedrock, may be overcome through theaddition of enhanced treatment components to the conventional septic systems.Technologies have been developed to deal with a range of problematic soilconditions that include allowing for smaller soil absorption areas, reducingisolation distances, and providing for nitrogen credits. New systems have alsobeen developed with alternate soil absorption systems as substitutes for septictanks (Winkler 1998)
