Memory Page Sharing
Memory Page Sharing is a WSv feature that helps maximize virtual machine memory usage efficiency. When two virtual machines have identical pages stored in memory, WSv will maintain a single copy of that page and use copy-on-write semantics to facilitate changes to the shared page if a guest operating system needs to change that page. For example, on a WSv host running ten virtual machines with the same operating system, it’s very likely that there are many pages in common among these virtual machines. Windows Server virtualization finds these identical pages and shares the common pages among all virtual machines
The effectiveness of page sharing will vary widely depending how homogenous or heterogeneous the workloads are. For example, ten virtual machines running identical operating systems will have greater page sharing efficiency than ten virtual machines running ten different operating systems. Page sharing will work with any guest operating system and will make more effective use of host server memory resources.
