Transformed root cultures
Hairy root cultures of Taxus  media var. Hicksii were
established using three strains of Agrobacterium rhizogenes:
ATCC 15834, TR 105 and LBA 9402. The
shoot tips, young leaves and hypocotyls of 8-week old
seedlings (obtained using the Zhiri et al. 1994 method)
were directly wounded with a sterile needle containing
bacteria. In one experiment 15 seedlings were
contaminated by the same bacterial strain. Infected
seedlings were placed on hormone-freemodified DCR
medium (Gupta & Durzan 1985) with addition of sucrose
