Who We Are​
The Asia Canine Protection Alliance (ACPA) is an international alliance of animal protection organisations formed by Humane Society International, Soi Dog Foundation, Animals Asia, and Change For Animals Foundation. We are committed to improving the welfare of dogs across Asia by ending the inhumane trade in dogs for human consumption. This trade represents a severe and prevalent animal welfare concern, in addition to creating a real risk to human health by facilitating the transmission of rabies and other diseases, such as cholera and trichinellosis.

ACPA’s initial focus is to end the illegal trade of dogs from Thailand, Laos and Cambodia into Vietnam, where an estimated 5 million dogs are slaughtered every year for human consumption. We will do this by tackling both the supply of dogs from Thailand, Laos and Cambodia, and the demand for dog meat in Vietnam. Conservative estimates suggest that over 80,000 dogs are traded across these countries and killed for human consumption each year. Numerous investigations have documented the severe cruelty inherent in all stages of the dog meat trade - sourcing, transport, sale and slaughter.​
​The Issue: The Illegal Trade in Dogs for Human Consumption
Whilst dog meat is eaten in several regions of the world, including parts of Europe, Russia, Africa and Latin America, its consumption is most widespread in Asia. As a result, the region generates the greatest animal welfare concern due to the many thousands of dogs being taken from the street or reared on dog farms, before being transported long distances and inhumanely slaughtered.

The journeys the dogs are taken on often last many days, during which the dogs remain tightly packed into small cages with no food, water or rest. Many die from suffocation, dehydration or heatstroke before they reach their final destination. For those who survive, the gruelling journey ends at a slaughterhouse, market or restaurant. The way in which dogs are slaughtered varies between countries, provinces, slaughterhouses and restaurants, but hanging, beating and bleeding out from a cut to the throat or groin are all common ways of killing, often in full view of other dogs.
