Chinese shipbuilders’ new orders up 108% y-o-y in January-May

The number of orders continues to hike in the Chinese shipbuilding sector, up 108% y-o-y in January-May, while production rates keep falling.
According to the report compiled by the China Association of National Shipbuilding Industry (CANSI), new orders reached 34.73 million t deadweight in the first five months of the year.
This means the Chinese shipbuilders had orders for 150.47 million t deadweight by the end of last month, up 41.4% y-o-y.
Meanwhile, the shipbuilders fulfilled contracts for 13.02 million t deadweight in January-May, down 24.3% y-o-y. Market players attribute it to bankruptcies of numerous small enterprises in China. The process is slowing down, however, as production rates dropped 9.2% in May and 11% in April in month-to-month comparison.
Prices in the Chinese shipbuilding segment have grown over the period because orders for new vessels are passed on to large companies exclusively. In January-May, ndustrial production was estimated at RMB 154.5 billion($25 billion), up 10.5% y-o-y, according to CANSI.
